Lincoln Street
Green Strip
The Lincoln Street Green Strip is a weedy, neglected
parcel of land encased by a rusty chain link fence in
North Allston. Despite its appearance, the site’s
concrete stairway functions as a gateway, connecting residents
to the neighborhood at large. Each day, countless Allston
residents climb the stairs to access the area’s
shopping districts or to wait for the MBTA’s #66
bus.
The Allston Brighton CDC has partnered with community
members, the City of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood
Development, the New
England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), and the National
Parks Service to transform this neglected site into
a beautiful and inspiring public space. The community
vision for the land is to integrate hardy yet attractive
plant species with permanent art installations for all
to enjoy.
In January 2006, the artist group LeggeLewisLegge
was chosen by a panel of community members and partner
organizations to develop improvements for the site. They
are working with the community to develop a transformative
design. Once the design is approved by the community and
the city, construction is expected to begin in 2007. See
their web
pages for renderings of their design proposal for
Lincoln St.
This was a competitive, national selection process that
was funded in part by Art
& Community Landscapes a partnership of the National
Endowment for the Arts, the National
Parks Service and the New
England Foundation for the Arts with additional support
from Anonymous.
